One of the important consumables for the MMA welding machine is the welding electrode, also known as the stick electrode. The welding electrode is a metal rod that is coated with a flux. When using the MMA welding machine, the electrode is held in an electrode holder. The flux on the electrode serves multiple purposes. It protects the weld pool from atmospheric contamination by creating a gaseous shield. For example, when welding outdoors or in a less-than-ideal environment, the flux on the electrode used with the MMA welding machine helps to prevent oxides and other impurities from getting into the weld. Different types of electrodes are available for use with the MMA welding machine, depending on the type of metal being welded. For instance, electrodes for welding mild steel are different from those for welding stainless steel.
