KL University students develop PathSafe to help travellers navigate safer routes during severe weather
A team of B.Tech students from KLH Aziznagar, a constituent of KL University with a 45+ year legacy, has developed PathSafe, an intelligent route safety platform that combines navigation with real-time weather analysis to help travellers make safer decisions during road journeys.
Currently in the prototype stage, the web-based application analyses weather conditions along multiple travel routes and classifies them as Safe, Caution, or Danger, enabling users to consider route safety alongside distance and traffic. The project reflects how top universities in South India are encouraging students to build technology solutions for real-world challenges.
The idea for PathSafe emerged from a personal experience. During a road trip to Puducherry, student G. Rama Purushotham Reddy and his friends encountered heavy rainfall and poor visibility caused by the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah. Although conventional navigation applications showed normal traffic conditions, they did not indicate that the planned route passed through an area experiencing severe weather, forcing the group to abandon their journey.
Inspired by this experience, G. Rama Purushotham Reddy, along with K. Varun Kumar Reddy, K. Vishnuvardhan Reddy, and J. Vishnu Vardhan, designed PathSafe to bridge the gap between navigation and weather intelligence.
The platform generates multiple driving routes between a source and destination before analysing weather conditions at regular checkpoints along each route. It evaluates rainfall, wind speed, visibility, thunderstorms, and other conditions that can affect road safety.
The prototype also identifies hazardous sections of a journey on the map and recommends alternative routes when severe weather conditions are detected. The team envisions the solution supporting daily commuters, long-distance travellers, logistics and transport operators, emergency response teams, and families travelling during the monsoon season.
By integrating navigation with location-specific weather intelligence, the students aim to develop a practical tool that can help reduce travel risks and improve road safety during adverse weather conditions.
