Electronic Grade Nitric Oxide (NO): How a Tiny Process Gas Is Becoming Critical Infrastructure for Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing

A semiconductor fab can spend billions of dollars on buildings, lithography tools, ultrapure water, power systems and cleanrooms, yet one of the smallest inputs in the process can determine whether a wafer meets specification. Electronic Grade Nitric Oxide (NO) sits in that unusual category. The gas is consumed in relatively small quantities compared with nitrogen or oxygen, but its role becomes important when manufacturers are controlling interfaces, oxide properties, nitridation and thermal processing at nanometer-scale dimensions.

The interesting part is the scale mismatch. A modern semiconductor facility can process thousands of wafers every day, while the specialty-gas requirement for a single process step may be measured in standard liters rather than tonnes. This makes Electronic Grade Nitric Oxide (NO) less of a commodity-volume story and more of a precision-infrastructure story.

TSMC alone reported more than 17 million 12-inch-equivalent wafers of annual manufacturing capacity across its managed facilities in 2025. Its manufacturing footprint included advanced facilities in Taiwan, the United States, Japan and China, with Germany also entering its production network. Every additional fab therefore creates another requirement for qualified specialty-gas supply, distribution and contamination control.

The gas that operates at the interface

Nitric oxide is a simple molecule: one nitrogen atom and one oxygen atom. Semiconductor manufacturing makes that simple chemistry much more demanding.

The commercial challenge is not simply producing NO. It is producing it with sufficiently controlled impurities, maintaining that specification during filling and transportation, and delivering it to a process chamber without introducing particles, moisture or reactive contaminants.

For Electronic Grade Nitric Oxide (NO), the supply chain therefore has at least five technical layers:

  1. High-purity NO production

  1. Multi-stage purification

  1. Analytical verification

  1. Contamination-controlled cylinder filling

  1. Fab-level gas delivery and point-of-use control

A historical semiconductor purification patent, for example, describes electronic applications of NO in nitriding gate oxides and highlights the importance of controlling nitrogen-oxide impurities.

That explains why the economics cannot be judged by gas volume alone. If a cylinder contains several kilograms of product but prevents a wafer-quality excursion affecting hundreds or thousands of wafers, the economic value of the gas delivery is many times greater than its physical mass.

From cylinder to cleanroom: the infrastructure map

The infrastructure surrounding Electronic Grade Nitric Oxide (NO) is much larger than the cylinder itself.

A typical high-purity gas pathway can include the supplier's purification plant, analytical laboratory, certified cylinder preparation area, hazardous-gas storage, transportation network, fab gas cabinet, pressure regulation, filtration and point-of-use delivery.

The final distance between the cylinder and wafer can be only a few hundred metres, but every connection represents a potential contamination or leakage point.

This is why electronic-gas suppliers increasingly operate integrated infrastructure rather than simply selling cylinders. Linde describes semiconductor-gas systems spanning storage, purification, filtration and ultra-pure distribution, while its electronics portfolio includes more than 100 specialty gases and mixtures supplied through multiple container formats.

Air Liquide follows a similar infrastructure model. Its electronics specialty-material network includes 11 Electronics Materials Centers located across major manufacturing hubs including South Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore, the United States, France and Germany.

That geographic positioning matters. A fab does not only purchase gas purity; it purchases continuity.

If a semiconductor production line operates 24 hours a day, a one-hour interruption represents 1/24 of a day's available production time. At a facility processing several thousand wafers per day, even a short interruption can translate into hundreds of delayed wafer starts. The value proposition for Electronic Grade Nitric Oxide (NO) therefore increasingly includes inventory management, emergency replenishment and local technical support.

The 2026 market is small in dollars, but large in process relevance

Staticker's market sizing places the global Electronic Grade Nitric Oxide (NO) market at approximately USD 33.7 million in 2026, with the market forecast to reach approximately USD 49.7 million by 2032, representing a growth trajectory of about 6.6% annually over the period. The important interpretation is that this is a specialty-material market where revenue growth is being generated by semiconductor capacity expansion, higher process complexity and increasing qualification requirements rather than by bulk-volume consumption.

The market's modest absolute size should not be confused with modest strategic importance. A specialty gas can represent a fraction of fab operating expenditure while still being essential to a qualified process recipe.

Why advanced nodes change the value equation

The transition from mature semiconductor nodes toward 7 nm, 5 nm, 3 nm and below changes the economics of process gases.

At larger geometries, a small process variation may remain within an acceptable manufacturing window. At advanced nodes, the same variation can affect electrical characteristics, interface quality, leakage or device reliability.

The physical scale explains the sensitivity. A 1-nanometer dimensional change is already equivalent to only 0.001 micrometres. When several layers and interfaces are engineered within a few tens of nanometres, contamination or uncontrolled surface chemistry can become disproportionately important.

Electronic Grade Nitric Oxide (NO) is consequently positioned around process control rather than bulk consumption.

Its use can involve controlled oxidation, nitridation-related processing and thermal treatment. Air Liquide specifically identifies nitric oxide among specialty materials used as reactants and notes its use in annealing environments within electronics manufacturing.

The application map therefore extends beyond a single piece of semiconductor equipment.

It connects gas chemistry with:

  • Gate and interface engineering

  • Thin-film processing

  • Thermal treatment

  • Surface modification

  • Advanced logic devices

  • Memory manufacturing

  • Specialty semiconductor structures

That creates a second-order demand effect. When the number of process steps increases, the number of qualified chemical and gas inputs also increases. When the wafer diameter remains large, each process step is repeated across a greater wafer area. And when fabs move toward higher utilization, the number of process cycles per year increases.

The gas does not need to experience a dramatic increase in consumption per wafer to generate meaningful demand growth. A 5% increase in wafer output combined with a 3% increase in gas intensity and a 2% increase in high-purity qualification value can produce a much larger commercial effect than simple volume growth suggests.

The AI chip boom is indirectly a nitric oxide story

The strongest infrastructure signal is not coming from nitric oxide producers. It is coming from semiconductor capital expenditure.

In 2026, TSMC raised its U.S. investment commitment to approximately $265 billion, including additional fabrication and advanced packaging facilities, while increasing its expected 2026 capital expenditure range to $60–64 billion.

Intel also increased its 2026 capital expenditure forecast from $18 billion to $20 billion as it expands manufacturing capacity and advanced process technology.

South Korea is pursuing an even broader semiconductor infrastructure build-out. Government-backed initiatives announced in August 2026 included a 5 trillion-won semiconductor fund and 5 trillion won of trade finance, alongside a broader semiconductor investment program exceeding $576 billion involving Samsung, SK Hynix, suppliers and local governments.

These investments do not translate one-for-one into Electronic Grade Nitric Oxide (NO) demand. That would be an incorrect assumption.

The linkage is instead through fab count, wafer capacity, process complexity and utilization.

More fabs mean more gas cabinets.

More wafers mean more process cycles.

More advanced nodes mean tighter purity requirements.

More qualified process recipes mean greater switching costs between suppliers.

That is why Electronic Grade Nitric Oxide (NO) is increasingly best understood as a piece of semiconductor manufacturing infrastructure rather than simply another specialty chemical.
