The announcement to the contract has come amid an ongoing sexual harassment and discrimination suit in the name of Activision Blizzard brought by the state of California which claims that the company has long promoted the "frat boy" culture of work with WoTLK Classic Gold. Activision Blizzard leadership's "tone deaf" response to these allegations led to company walkouts. Many other lawsuits and investigation such as a $18 million arrangement against the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission, are also in the aftermath of the state of California's initial lawsuit.

As a result of the suit Blizzard began to make various modifications to WoW, updating older contents and references to the game that are "not appropriate." The WoW development team later issue a statement explaining that making changes to old and potentially harmful game content and references were part of "building an inclusive and friendly gaming world."

Alongside the new Social Contract, Shadowlands patch 9.2.5 will introduce cross-faction play the first time. This will allow players of the Horde and Alliance to unite for the purpose of raids, dungeons as well as other activities. Patch 9.2.5 is not yet set to have the date of release. Blizzard recently revealed WoW's next expansion, Dragonflight the expansion will introduce a new playable race character, class, and new Dragon Isles region, along with overhauls to systems such as skills and professions. Dragonflight isn't even set with a launch date, but an Amazon list for the expansion's prequel novel could indicate when it could arrive.
