Understanding BIS Certification Types | A Guide for Global Manufacturers
What is BIS Certification?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India’s national standards body responsible for ensuring that products meet Indian safety, quality, and reliability benchmarks. BIS certification is either mandatory or voluntary, depending on the product category. For certain products, certification is a legal requirement to enter the Indian market.
Types of BIS Certification
ISI Certification Scheme – Mandatory for industrial & consumer goods (cement, steel, appliances, etc.)
Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) – Mandatory for electronics & IT products (mobiles, laptops, LEDs, etc.)
Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS) – For overseas manufacturers; products get ISI Mark.
ECO Mark Scheme – Voluntary for eco-friendly products (soaps, detergents, packaging, paints, etc.).
